    Description

Very Rare FULL PLATE Antique CIVIL WAR SOLDIER TINTYPE, Infantry Corporal Wearing Frock Coat, ORIGINAL COPY OF CdV OF KIA SOLDIER
    DESCRIPTION:
Really scarce FULL PLATE Civil War soldier tintype. Full length photo of soldier standing, wearing frock coat. Complete with corporal's chevrons on the arms. Buttons have been tinted with gilt. Very handsome young man with beard. Leaning on against a studio chair. Tintype is also tinted, with the frock coat being a bit dark, while the pants are light blue.
On the bottom and lower left and right corners can clearly be seen the bottom of the original CdV mat that was all photographed with the original image on it. Also in the lower right corner you can see the edge of a fancy brass case mat. It appears that the CdV was placed in the brass mat to hold it still while the photographer took the reprint (photo of an original photo). This is also about the only way they had to enlarge a photo then, to take a photo of a photo, to enable framing and putting the enlarged image on the wall. Note that the part of the CdV mat above his shin has been shaded out and forms a background for the new photo. The full plate photographer did not shade below that point as it was not expected that that would show..
I have seen this done a couple of times before. If a soldier died or was killed during the war, there was usually little to remember him by except for an album CdV or 6th plate size photo. By doing this they had an enlargement that could be framed and put on the wall as a larger, more proper memorial and remembrance.
Think of how much this picture and the process of having it made, meant to the family of this soldier. THIS IS A GREAT ORIGINAL FULL PLATE CIVIL WAR TINTYPE OF A SOLDIER WHO WAS KILLED OR DIED DURING THE CIVIL WAR, WHICH IS VALUABLE ENOUGH, PLUS IT HAS A GREAT STORY & HISTORY ALONG WITH IT. A rare piece, and something for the serious, advanced collector.
This is standard full plate size, 6 3/8" x 8 1/2". It has a couple of very slight bends and marks as shown, but very good condition overall for its size. Because of their size, full plates are rarely seen in perfect condition unless they were always framed.
WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED IN A GAMEROOM OR MAN CAVE!  OR WITH ANY CIVIL WAR DISPLAY OR COLLECTION. A particularly nice original civil war FULL PLATE tintype, scarce for a KIA Infantry corporal!!
