CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL CDV PHOTO OF UNION SOLDIER, Elmer E. Ellsworth (1837-1861). This was in a Civil War album and was identified on the page. He was a US army officer and law clerk who was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union Officer to die. Before the war, he toured with a military drill team, the Zouave Cadets of Chicago. He was a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln eulogized him as the "greatest little man I ever met," After his death, Ellsworth's body lay in state at the White House. The phrase "Remember Ellsworth" became a rallying cry and a call to arms for the Union Army.  He was born in Malta, NY. He grew up in Mechanicville, NY. In 1854, he worked at a parent office in Rockford, Illinois. When he became engaged to Carrie Dpafford, her father demanded he find more suitable employment. So, he moved to Chicago to study law. In 1860, he moved to Springfield, Illinois to work with Abraham Lincoln. He helped with Lincoln's 1860 campaign. He was only 5 foot 6 inches. He was killed at the Marshall House on May 24, 1861 during the Union Army's takeover of Alexandria. His biography is on Wikipedia.  This is an original photograph. Buyer pays postage.
