CIVIL WAR ADGT BRYCE A WILSON MISS 9TH, CO H ALA 16TH WIA 1863 KIA 1864
Vintage, original albumen photograph on CDV from the Civil War Adjutant Bryce Alexander Wilson (1837-1864), one of three sons of Bryce and Mary Wilson of Franklin County, Alabama, to serve in the Confederate Army.  He originally joined the Mississippi 9th Infantry at Corinth, Mississippi in March of 1861, but later transferred  to Company H of the Alabama 16th Infantry where his brothers were serving.  During the Battle at Stones River, 31 December 1862-2 January 1863,  when both Lt. Col. Helvenston and Major McCaughy were wounded, Adjutant Wilson assumed command of the left flank and led the charge which forced the enemy to retreat while he also was wounded.  He was later commended for his actions by Col. W. B. Wood, commanding.  Again turning to the diary of his brother, Lt. James E. Wilson, who noted on 13 May 1863 "Brother Bryce came in this evening.  He is not entirely well yet.  He also is going home tomorrow morning.  He has a thirty day furlough".   This was in Huntsville, Alabama, and James was able to join him on the 19th.  Unfortunately, on 30 November 1864, during the Battle of Franklin, Bryce Wilson was killed in action.   After the war, is father, Bryce Wilson (born in Scotland),  recovered his body, as he had also recovered that of his son, William, for burial back home.  He was photographed by S. Anderson of New Orleans, in 1861, apparently at the same time as his brother William.  In fine condition, trimmed at the bottom.
