    Description

VERY rare and original, early 1860's CDV Photograph of United States Navy Civil War Rear Admiral Samuel F. DuPont by Mathew Brady. This fantastic, period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8” by 3 3/8” and is mounted on its original, square corner, photographer’s Card Mount (card measures approx 2 1/2" by 4"). The portrait is printed on the reverse with the photographers mark that reads in part "Published by E. Anthony... From Photographic Negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery". This wonderful, full length, standing portrait was likely taken sometime before July 16th, 1862 when DuPont was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in the U. S. Navy as he wears the uniform of a Commodore in the U. S. Navy.
Samuel Francis Du Pont (September 27, 1803 – June 23, 1865) was an American naval officer who achieved the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, and a member of the prominent Du Pont family; he was the only member of his generation to use a capital “D”. He served prominently during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, was superintendent of the United States Naval Academy, and made significant contributions to the modernization of the U. S. Navy.
This rare and wonderful CDV Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality with a few small spots and a light drip in the emulsion. Both the Albumen Photograph and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and well preserved although the lower corners of the mount are clipped to facilitate the insertion into a period CDV Photo Album.
A very rare and original, early 1860's CDV Photograph of United States Navy Rear Admiral Samuel F. DuPont by Mathew Brady and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
