Description
Rare and original, 1860’s CDV Photograph of Union Civil War General John C. Fremont by Mathew Brady. This wonderful CDV Photo measures approx. 2 3/8" by 4" (including the original, square cornered, gold rule border card mount). The back of the mount is printed with the photographer’s credits that reads in part “Published by E & H T Anthony... from Photographic Negative in Brady’s National Photographic Portrait Galleries…”. This portrait was originally take at Brady's National Gallery. The CDV features a full length portrait of General Fremont wearing the uniform of a Union Army General posed by a column on which his forage cap rests. The General stands with his hands resting on the hilt of his sword which stands upright in front of him. Fremont wears a dark, double-breasted frock coat with major general’s shoulder straps, black felt collar and cuffs and matching dark trousers. At his waist is his sash and sword belt. The forage cap on the column appears to be a McDowell pattern with a U. S. in a wreath cap badge.
John Charles Frémont (January 21, 1813 – July 13, 1890), was an American military officer, explorer, the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of president of the U.S., and the first presidential candidate of a major party to run on a platform opposing slavery. During the 1840s, that era's penny press accorded Frémont the sobriquet "The Pathfinder". It remains in use, and he is sometimes called "The Great Pathfinder". During the American Civil War he was given command of the armies in the west but made hasty decisions (such as trying to abolish slavery without consulting Washington), and was relieved.
This rare and original, 1860’s CDV Portrait of Civil War General John C. Fremont is in very good condition. The focus is sharp and the contrast and tonality are good although the Photo is a bit toned. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are generally clean and crisp with a handful of tiny, dark spots caused by blemishes in the negative.
