1860s CIVIL WAR TINTYPE PHOTO OF UNION ARMY SOLDIER CASED PHOTOGRAPH #1

Description

Very rare and wonderful, 1860's Ninth Plate Tintype Photograph of a teenage, Civil War Union Cavalry or Artillery Soldier wearing a slouch hat and shell jacket. This original, Tintype Photo measures approx. 2 1/2" by 3 1/4" (Ninth Plate size) and is housed in a gutta percha / thermoplastic Union Case with an Ambrotype of another young man that resembles the soldier and may be a relative / brother.
This outstanding, 1860's Tintype Photo features a ½ length, seated portrait of what appears to be a newly minted, Union Private wearing a shell jacket and a slouch hat rakishly pinned up on the left hand side. The Soldier is VERY young – no more than a teenager ready to go off to War!!
The case that the Image is housed in is identified by Berg as 3-262 and titled Geometric.
This wonderful, 1860's Civil War Union Soldier Tintype Photo is in excellent condition. The Image is crisp and bold with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. There is no staining or discoloration - no scratches, no flaking, no surface crazing and no bends or creases. The Photograph is very well preserved and displays beautifully. The Gutta Percha, Union hard case is in excellent condition with no damage or wear - it closes squarely and, although the latch is undamaged, it does not catch.
A very rare and very attractive, 1860's Ninth Plate, Tintype Photograph of a very young, Civil War Union Artillery or Cavalry and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
