VERY rare and original, 1860’s Hand Colored, Quarter Plate Civil War Ambrotype Photograph of an armed, Union Militia Officer wearing a wonderful, colored and gilt highlighted uniform. This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 3 1/8” by 4 1/8” and is housed in what appears to be its original pressed leather hard case.
This very attractive, Civil War Ambrotype Photo is a near full length, seated portrait of the Civil War period Militia Officer holding his sword in his right hand.He sits with his legs crossed and wears a frock coat with epaulets and a red sash. A wonderful, plumed shako with infantry hat badge and what appears to be a New York Militia plate on the table to the left. His sash is colored red and the hilt of his sword, his epaulets, coat buttons, belt plate and shako plates are highlighted in gold gilt. Overall the Image is VERY attractive and striking!! Neither the subject nor the photographer are identified in any way.
This rare and original, Civil War Ambrotype Portrait of a Militia Officer is attractive but, unfortunately, in damaged condition. The Ambrotype plate itself has numerous cracks and is repaired and stabilized with transparent tape on the recto. The cover glass has cracks at the upper left hand corner and the Ambrotype exhibits spotting to the emulsion. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The hand coloring is dark and bold. The pressed leather hard case is repaired at the spine but is otherwise well preserved.
A very rare and original, 1860's Hand Colored, Quarter Plate Ambrotype Photograph of a Northern Militia Officer and, although damaged, still a nice addition to any collection!!
